Slow and fucking weird, just how I like my movies! A son is called home by his estranged Father, and right from the first knock the awkward vibes are on overdrive. Elijah Wood's Norval Greenwood is an odyssey of the strange โ€” bowl-cutted, pedo-stached, financially rich, but emotionally poor โ€” a blank slate of the fake. Nobody can turn on the weird like Elijah. I wanted that Elton John scene to go on for another excruciating 15-20 minutes. It's pure cringe, the pinnacle of uncomfortableness.

The weirdo charm starts to wear off a bit once the meat of the story is revealed. It never gets โ€œnormalโ€ per se, but I loved the first half's slow, agonizing, bumbling mess of a family drama. Surprisingly though, the second half hits the heart of the Father/Son relationship pretty effectively in between all the ball skewering, shit pen stabbing, and saran wrap smothering action. I saw a blurb with Ant Timpson where he explained the disconnect with his Father after his death โ€” stories he never knew, a persona unknown, a stranger โ€” and that emotional schism definitely squeezes through amidst all the weird, fucked up shit. It's touching by the time the final scene plays out, still fuckin' strange, but touching.
