The Silencer

The Silencer

A deeply strange film that I could believe would be in the Criterion Collection if Olivier Assayas had directed it and not Amy Goldstein. It hits the checkpoints of both an assassin drama and a skeezy DTV erotic thriller, but it enters them sideways with this weird 10th Victim/video game framing and Chris Mulkey (Twin Peaks' Hank Jennings) providing color commentary throughout. It never really commits to being either of those type of movies, skimming along as something wholly different and vaguely artsy in its oddness. The silencers don't even seem to work (or at least the sound design doesn't have the typical silenced gunshot effect!). And imagine a James Bond type hero suddenly making out with a hot person met in a pool hall, but then calling the whole affair off because there was no condom. Gotta wear the glove if you want the love!
