Minding the Gap

Minding the Gap ★★★★½

All I knew about this coming into it was that it was connected to skateboarding in some way, and boy is it so much more than that. Rockford is only an hour away from me, and this film was quite the shock in terms of the general state of the place for me. I had absolutely no idea the scale of the problems in Rockford. I'm simply at a loss for words in describing how beautifully Bing Liu portrays these stories and the overarching ideas that weave their way into every character's lives. The emotionality of this documentary is up there with the likes of Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father, and I'm not sure I've ever empathized with a character as much as I did with Keire. I am blessed with the unfathomable privilege of not really having anything as significant to escape from as these people do, yet regardless of your situation this film will have an overwhelming effect on you, I can guarantee that. Beautiful.
