ACTION / REACTION / INTERNAL DIALOGUE

    Ground rumbles
    Look around a bit.
    That's weird...

    Buildings shake
Run a little bit, look around.
    Worrying...

Alien war machine bursts from the ground, toppling buildings
Run a little bit, look back at alien craft.
I knew there was something weird going on...

Beams emerge from the alien war machine, tearing up concrete, flipping cars and destroying buildings
Run a little bit, stop, look back.
This could be hazardous. Best to move away slightly…

I'm shocked at how far downhill this went after the opening credits. Wretched.

Wonderfully insightful in regards to masculinity, class and perceptions of class in 1970s Britain. Charming, funny and a little bit more subtle than it may appear at first glance. A joyous little carry on.

Delroy Lindo is better than the film deserves.

Right now, in 2020, while all the cinemas are closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I think there's something to be said for the cinema experience, that is, the setting itself. At its best, it could feel great to sit in a grand theatre (grand compared with the average living room anyway) with all the procedure and ceremony around the film playing out in front of you. Sitting in the dark, only the immense images lighting up the room, with…

Comes off like one of those films about an average (read: white) American family taking in an unusual but extraordinary animal as a pet. Even has that "oh-no-look-what's-he's-gone-and-done-but-wait-it-doesn't-matter-because-he's-part-of-the-family-now" scene.

Shall we be generous and call this kind of Harry and the Hendersons shit unconscious bias?

Late to the party. I didn't see this when it first came out because it seemed a bit old hat and over the top. Nope.

I liked how clinical the atmosphere of the film was. The human, emotional perspective is there but is portrayed as matter-of-factly as any of the symptoms of the virus. The film feels appropriately cold, brutal and indiscriminate.

All the Brits playing non-Brits had strange accents. Is Jude Law meant to be Australian in this? Odd…

Very odd all the way through but the ending was particularly awful. It's missing an act but I'm not entirely sure which one. Stuck with this ending though, clearly the epilogue should have revisited Tarzi's son rather than repeating the terrorist video we've already seen. The terrorism stuff was very off-putting as the film wasn't written well enough to handle the subject.

Despite their top-billing Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Carice van Houten's characters were completely superfluous whilst Eriq Ebouaney and Guy…
