There is a plot that bookends this, but a good 40 minutes or so in the middle is just one extended grace note. Serene filmmaking. Clint makes fun of some cops and keeps calling them losers under his breath.
I realize this film is a product of its time, but I just can't get on board with how cruel it is in its treatment of the Nadia character (who, incidentally, is more interesting than any of the brothers). It isn't just that she suffers, it's that her suffering is treated as far less important than the effects it has on the Parondi family. It's a moral argument I find kind of disgusting.
Honestly, after finishing this I just wanted to go rewatch Nights of Cabiria to wash the bad taste from my mouth.
