    Easy see to how the ending could be deflating for some, but there’s just something so pointed in the occlusion of a flesh-and-blood analogue for the imagined Alice Reed, especially when other male figures from Wanley’s dreamscape manifest themselves in their harmless forms.     Eugene Pallette later became a screwball fixture (his timbre and physique make obvious why), but he has one of the more subtly moving gestures in this film, which is no small feat, considering there’s a serenade played on a singing saw and accompanied by fellow prisoners through a jailhouse window to a lover, and a wedding scene that bounces back and forth between finality and dew-eyed romance.
