“This is the water, and this is the well. Drink full, and descend. The horse is the white of the eyes, and dark within.”
i know there’s some part of me that says that neon genesis evangelion is the best show ever made and in terms of personal matters it is. in terms of everything else there’s no doubt in my mind that this deserves the #1 spot. david lynch always said that twin peaks was never 100% about laura palmer (even though its best parts were always centered around/involved her) and that the plot was the interactions between the townspeople and this certainly reflects that; like caden cotard’s stage play in synecdoche, new york nobody shares the stage for too long if at all and while certain stories hold our attention better they’re all of the same importance in lynch’s opinion. episode 8 is something that i can’t believe aired on mainstream television as it is on the same level of inventiveness, audacity, and jaw-dropping wonder as the stargate sequence in 2001 and the genesis sequence in the tree of life. out of everything i’ve seen and heard in my life the ending - sheryl lee’s soul shattering wail, echoing into eternity as everything that we watched fades to nothing more than a black void of nonexistence - will haunt me until i die.
