    i've watched and loved a number of tsai ming-liang's films recently for reasons that are all present in full force here, and at this point he has become one of my favorite directors. one is forced to experience space and time more fully, yet i wish all of his films were twice as long because it's hard not to fall in love with their characters and environments. tsai's sense of humor is great, as is his framing of loneliness, and as a result each painstakingly composed long take can be amusing or devastating or both at once. and that toilet scene is an all-timer.
