TW / sexual assault
this movie and the message it portrays is nothing new for women, but the movie wasn’t made for women. promising young woman is for the men in your life who don’t think about what it means to experience life as a woman. they have the privilege to be “promising young men” above all at the expense of the lives of equally promising young women. the women whose futures are thrown away when men abuse their power and when the system refuses to acknowledge allegations at the expense of men’s reputations. a man’s future and reputation is always valued more than a woman’s, and i think this movie did a wonderful job at breaking down the “good guy” figure that plagues rape culture and makes other men and women victim blame so easily. i didn’t love a few of the choices, but overall this movie is sure to start and interesting discourse about what it means to be a woman in a society that has male privilege etched into every aspect of itself.
