the knife is his penis you see
What a juggernaut. Leaves me feeling so exhausted, yet so alive. Friedkin's run in the 70s (I know this came out in 80 but cut me some fuckin slack) is pretty unstoppable. Four classics, back to back to back to back. It's astounding. The power and raw energy in these films is some of the strongest Hollywood has ever had. Cruising is the kind of movie that just mercilessly beats you over the head with its tone and man, does it work for this. The powdery blues of the nightclub scenes paired with the overgrown, rotting city creates a world that almost consumes its characters in its shadows. Each stab of the knife feels like ten. This film is NOT easy to watch. But it's VERY rewarding. One of the greatest serial killer films, one of the greatest LGBT films, one of the greatest films, period.
