Goodfellas, All Grown Up
Clocking in at 3 1/2 hours, Scorcese’s film is certainly epic. Epic in its story, epic in its ambition, and epic in its runtime. It’s a film that’s fundamentally about aging, and you’ll age a bit just watching it. It’s also a film that mostly earns those 3 1/2 hours.
This could reductively be called a sorta rehash of Goodfellas, and it does owe a lot to that film, which is nothing short of a masterwork…
Gorgeous black and white photography amped up with acrobatic camera movement makes for a visually stunning film. The script, while clearly a product of its time with its moral underpinnings, is also just odd enough (think touches of a yet-to-come Night of the Hunter) to successfully pry itself from the grips of What You Might Expect. Plus strong performances all around and a fitting and effectively bombastic score. But at the end of the day, this is Borzage's movie. And it's a damn fine one.
I'll try not to spoil OUATI...H because Quentin asked me not to. In fact, he asked everyone not to. Which is fucking stupid, cause merely saying that is a spoiler in and of itself and essentially affects the way anyone that received that message takes in the film. Regardless, I suppose it doesn't matter too much, cause the movie kinda sucks anyway.
Having said that, it's not without it's merits and I'll throw those out there first - Brad Pitt…
