    Princess Mononoke

    ★★★★★

Princess Mononoke is the greatest animated movie I have seen and one of my favourite films of all time. But why?

Firstly, there's the sheer scope of the story. A lot of Ghibli movies are quite small-scale with low stakes which is great and I love films like My Neighbour Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service and Ponyo. However, it's great to see them produce a true epic in every sense from the stakes and runtime to the sense of location and…

    ★★★★★

Right, here we go then. I have about 1,300 films on my watchlist and Persona is the one that I wanted to see above all others. This is partly because I was intrigued by the synopsis and its reputation, partly because I want to watch more Bergman films but mostly because it had a massive influence on David Lynch, especially with Mulholland Drive which is my favourite film of all time.

So, did it live up to expectations? Of course…

    The Twilight Saga: New Moon

The cinematography is better than the first film but everything else is much worse. At least the original is so bad it's funny, this is just relentlessly boring. Don't have anything else to say, it's not worth my time. I'm actually in a bad mood after watching this.

    The Piano

    ★★★½

My initial thought after watching The Piano was 'really strong movie' but as I think about it more there are quite a few elements of the story that didn't work for me. Firstly, the whole idea of the protagonist being mute felt rather lazy and pointless to me. It seemed like Jane Campion wanted something to make the film more unique but couldn't think of a logical reason to explain why the character doesn't speak so just didn't bother. The…

    Memories of Murder

    ★★★★½

Memories of Murder is a fantastic crime drama that reminds me of David Fincher's best work but very much has its own style unique to Bong Joon Ho. Like Zodiac the film focuses on an investigation into the crimes of a serial killer but the mystery is never solved which results in an open ending. This doesn't bother me as the strength of the storytelling and filmmaking maintains tension throughout and gives the viewer an extremely satisfying experience.

    The Host

    ★★★★

The Host is another strong entry in Bong Joon Ho's filmography although it never reaches the heights of his previous film Memories of Murder. It does feel very different to the other features he's made as it's a proper monster movie. The early scene where the monster first appears on land is genuinely exciting and the story never slows down from then on. This pacing has both good and bad side effects. On the one hand it keeps the viewer…
