    Somehow missed this back in 1993 and I’m sure it would have made my teenage heart, already broken by Phoenix’s death, shatter even more. I’ve never really gotten over it, truth be told, as it is.  Phoenix is wonderful, including in his performance here of the song he wrote  “Lone Star State of Mine” (produced by T Bone Burnett). 

    But this is a really good movie in its own right, gentle and earnest in all the right ways, wearing its heart on its sleeve, with great music and a mostly-ensemble cast that I just want to hang out with for a few more hours.

    Catching up on some De Palma blindspots this summer & wow, Sisters might be my new favorite? I’m still a total sucker for the Hitch stuff, but I love how De Palma’s references are never seem to be ends in themselves. They don’t feel merely derivative.

    I re-watched The Florida Project with my Film 101 students, and while they all appreciated the film and many adored it, I got a few complaints that there’s “no story,” that the characters “never grow or change.”

    I suppose, immersed in my own bubble of being quite happy to accept a cinema verite and/or Italian neorealist-adjacent film, where the profound is in the mundane and where a film does not have to have a strong three-act structure for me…
