Saw this in a theatre as a small kid and was completely enchanted by the whole thing. Seeing it much later with my daughters I was amazed how beautiful the animation is (apparently influenced by Chinese painting.) Bambi is filled with unforgettable scenes like the exploration of the ice lake and great characters (Thumper setting the standard for the side-kick.) It also is the product of a time when Disney was not afraid to creep kids out (see the Pleasure Island segment in Bambi's predecessor Pinocchio.) Bambi's mother getting shot, of course, is one of the great cinematic trauma's and the way it plays out is flat out amazing: Bambi's father appearing out of the snow is both incredibly touching and bad-ass.
