Twilight ★★★★

my second aravindan - a slow, melancholy, capacious portrait of the artist as a young man heading not towards maturity or mastery but alienation and institutionalised insanity. hariprasad chaurasia's raga tone poem, which scores the breadth of the film, has an alternately soothing and disquieting quality, and the many wide shots of balu surrounded by seascapes and woods - almost always at dusk - are invariably captivating. as in béla tarr, a strong sense of the inexorability of nature and the ineluctable facts of personal and social defeat. overall a sombre but quite gorgeous work.
