Nora’s review published on Letterboxd:
Glad I finally got around to watching it. God, what a brutal, unforgiving film. Drives its point home well and hard.
Muni, as ever, is fabulous -- proving his versatility and skill as an actor. Not until the very end -- and even then -- does he become hardened by the cruel and unfortunate misfortunes that plague his life by way of one foolish misunderstanding. The film, while not explicity violent, does a great job at conjuring up such images by building up an austere environment flocked with abusive officers who jump at any chance to abuse and exploit their inmates.
Glenda Farrell does great in her role here, too. Really worth a watch but it's not exactly a feel good film. Great social commentary and ahead of its time.
