  • Sans Soleil

    Sans Soleil

this ephemeral mystical and precocious prose paired with these images is really cool for about 15 minutes and then proceeds to become increasingly grating beyond that.

  • Brief Encounter

    Brief Encounter

this kind of pitched-to-the-bleachers romantic melodrama doesn't really work for me without some thorny underbelly or a metaphysical sweep, but lean being this good at directing three years into his directing career was pretty insane.

  • Solaris

    Solaris

    surly sleepy russian sadness.

  • Clouds of Sils Maria

    Clouds of Sils Maria

tackling the arbitrary distinctions we make between identities and meta-narratives in various collective performance games without turning it into a quasi-horror exercise is a theoretically admirable artistic exercise. who one claims to be on a moment to moment basis and what their "opinions" and "desires" are are of course full of shit and are constantly folding into each other in subconscious ways that generally go unremarked upon in the scaffolding of how our reality is superstructurally constructed, and yet this…

  • 3 Women

    3 Women

altman purposely playing with a premise that minimizes all of his strengths as a director is odd.

  • Rashomon

    Rashomon

shows signs that the better kurosawa was figuring it out but not quite there yet.

  • City of Women

    City of Women

fellini's understanding of how subjectivity interacting with cultural perspective totalizes and dominates reality interests me anthropologically, less so when exclusively documenting the perspective of the singular man federico fellini. mainly because being the man federico fellini would be a deeply unpleasant experience for me. this is so unpleasant to watch that it's a borderline horror movie, which may actually have value, but i didn't go into it with that mindset, and my rating is only going to be reflective of what the experience of watching it was actually like for me.

  • New Nightmare

    New Nightmare

what if i were to tell you that the real horror...........was in reality all along

  • Last Year at Marienbad

    Last Year at Marienbad

gave this two chances because some of the directing really is amazingly batshit, but this ultimately suffers from not being avant-garde enough to be a purely abstract piece, nor a particularly good exploration of how the subjective/objective distinction of memory works. there's a thin line between being well-presented insipid pablum and an outright historical masterpiece that this treads, and unfortunately i end up falling on the side of the former.

  • Pain and Glory

    Pain and Glory

dope musical cues and almodovar can obviously direct, but the problem here is that the "pain" in this just isn't very dramatically or thematically compelling

  • Hollow Man

    Hollow Man

the casual misogyny of american social ontology and the sick masculine power fantasies it enables. nothing to outright complain about here but also not much to really latch onto once the central conceit has been established.
