Part phenomenally transportive and alive time capsule, part drippingly cool old school drag race, part genuinely funny romance, all tethered together into a fully compelling series of little human stories.

No secret how much I love Star Wars but it's impossible not to be a little sad we didn't get more of this George Lucas.

Easily one of the greatest debuts ever. Incredible filmmaking, mesmerising storytelling, amazing characters, ridiculously cool in the most 70s way, and every frame looks like a painting.

Takes one of the greatest science fiction stories ever written and brutally hacks it up and poops it out into a cartoonish, unintelligible, meaningless regressive caricature. When Lynch disowns it and calls it a stupid awful nightmare, follow his lead.

It's an easy and tempting trap to reassess an old film with production design ahead of its time made by a beloved director with an amazing cast as a hidden masterpiece, but this movie is a shockingly misconceived empty mess, and the world is better off pretending 'Alan Smithee' really did direct it and forgetting it exists.

Totally different from what I was expecting, but its weird blend of off-beat humour, slow and almost mesmerisingly aimless drama and a genuinely human, complex but stereotype-free look at addiction and drugs (impressive for now, let alone 1989) makes me think I kinda loved it.

"REMEMBER? Remembering's dangerous. I find the past such a worrying, anxious place....notice the hideously bloated sense of humanity's importance. The club-footed social conscience and the withered optimism. It's certainly not for the squeamish, is it? Most repulsive of all, are its frail and useless notions of order and sanity. If too much weight is placed upon them...they snap. Who can blame them, in a word as psychotic as this? Any other response would be crazy!"

    INT. MARVEL STUDIOS- DAY.

KEVIN: Hey Dave, you whipped up those post credits scenes to set up Avengers 4 yet?

DAVE: Sure have, Kev! People are gonna love 'em! By the way, what movie are these going with?

    KEVIN (pauses, blank): ...

EXEC #3: Hey, what about Bug Boy? He hasn't shown up in a while.

KEVIN (chuckles): People love Ant-Man! Such fun.

    DAVE: Genius! Another home run.

EXEC #3: I like it. Do we have a story?

    DAVE (giggling):…
