while not everything on a technical aspect works the way it should (or the way i would have hoped), i still think this movie is engaging as hell, primarily due to carey mulligan’s unforgettable performance.
i will say that the ending regarding cassie’s death and the police involvement is incredibly ridiculous, given the real-life context of how thousands of rape and sexual assault cases have been handled by actual police institutions. while it somewhat sticks the landing, it’s still incredibly rushed, tonally messy, and overall illogical to the point where it’s practically a disservice to the story as a whole. it’s like sticking the landing of a gymnastics routine and breaking both legs in the process; you’ve done it but at what cost.
anyways, i still think this movie did continue an ongoing conversation that needs to be had, i just wish it went about it in a much more appropriate manner. now go stream “Angel of the Morning” by Juice Newton.
