The Last Duel

The Last Duel ★★★★½

Much more than just a movie about "the old times reflecting our Current Times™"; instead a deeply bleak, methodical, well made and powerful commentary on the bitter reality of insecure hypermasculinity that really hasn't changed much in the past 700 years. That even in a matter of a woman's pride and honor, men would literally rather settle their disputes through a petty dick-measuring competition than simply listening to the victim and what she's been through. And the woman; caught in the middle of it all, can do nothing except speak her truth to the world, no matter if they believe it or not.

Feels such a joy to watch a real, complex film for adults made by adults filled with a tremendous cast and spectacle that wasn't simply an indie. And also feels so disheartening that Disney tried to bury this fantastic film on release. Absolutely abhorrent and disgraceful. But regardless, great art will still live on. And Ridley Scott and team should be very proud of what they have crafted here. One of the best of the year.
