The Festival de Cannes (Cannes Festival) is an annual film festival held in Cannes, France, which previews new films from around the world. Founded in 1946, it is considered the most prestigious film festival in the world and is one of the most publicized, together with the Berlin International Film Festival and the Venice Film Festival. The invitation-only festival is held annually in May at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès.

Ever since its creation, the Festival de Cannes has remained faithful to its founding purpose: to draw attention to and raise the profile of films with the aim of contributing towards the development of cinema, boosting the film industry worldwide and celebrating cinema at an international level.

The Official Selection serves to highlight the diversity of cinematic creation through its different sections, the two most important of which are the Competition and Un Certain Regard. Films that are representative of “auteur cinema with a wide audience appeal” are presented in Competition, and Un Certain Regard focuses on works that have an original aim and aesthetic. The Official Selection also includes Out of Competition films, Special Screenings and Midnight Screenings, Cannes Classics and the Cinéfondation selection targeting film schools.

The Palme d'Or (Golden Palm) is the highest prize awarded at the Cannes Film Festival. It was introduced in 1955 by the organizing committee. From 1939 to 1954, the highest prize was the Grand Prix du Festival International du Film. In 1964, it was replaced once again by the Grand Prix du Festival before being reintroduced in 1974.

Prior to the beginning of each event, the Festival appoints the jury who will hold sole responsibility for choosing which films in the official competition section will receive an award. Jurors are chosen from a wide range of international artists, based on their body of work and respect from their peers. The Jury for the feature films in competition is obliged to award the Palme d'Or, the Grand Prix, the award for the Best Director, the Jury Prize, the award for the Best Screenplay, the award for the Best Actress and the award for the Best Actor.

Rules have changed over the years, but nowadays, the prize list must not contain more than one joint award and the Palme d'Or can never be awarded jointly. Furthermore, no film can receive more than one award. However, the award for the Best Screenplay and the Jury Prize can be combined with a Best Performance award, on special dispensation of the Festival's President.
