Jeepers Creepers

Jeepers Creepers ★★★★

There was a time when I used to confuse this movie with "Joy Ride" every time it was shown on TV. In fact, I thought I knew the whole movie, but apparently I only knew the first twenty minutes.

And indeed, this movie is just as fantastic as I remembered it to be. There is a great deal of tension present, the jump scares are effective, and Jeepers Creepers is one of the most underrated monsters in any movie. Every detail from top to bottom makes him seem so recognizable yet so menacing. Another thing that took me by surprise is the incredible cinematography, particularly the use of darkness to obscure the creature's face and only show the silhouette and white curly hair. Also the chase scenes were very reminiscent of Spielberg's "Duel".

If I had any criticism it would be that in the end our protagonists end up making such stupid decisions that the tension and anxiety resulted more from frustration than fear. Toward the end, I also felt Victor ran out of ideas, and although there were several disturbing images such as the one in the cell with Jeepers, I also felt like the movie ran a bit long.

All in all, while the movie has its problems both on screen and behind the scenes, there is no doubt that there is a reason why it has so much popularity. Sadly, the sequels haven't been able to match the quality of this film.

NOTE: I will be away most of the first day of shooting for my miniseries. I might post another review later today, but just so y'all know I'll be slow on the reading back.
