    Hospital

    ★★★★½

Hospital is sweeter and much more hilarious than it may seem, especially coming off the heels of Wiseman's unflinchingly bleak Titicut Follies and upsetting High School. Packed to the brim with the kinds of frantic and stressful situations you would expect from a vérité documentary about a hospital (and all captured with Wiseman's patented just-another-day matter-of-factness) but the staff seem to really care about these patients even with the numerous issues plaguing the facility itself.

    ★★★½

Nasty, uncomfortable, yet oddly subdued Hong Kong revenge picture that I think remakes The Virgin Spring better than The Last House on the Left does. The dirty, scratchy, hard-subbed transfer I saw, with all its ear-piercing high-treble sound, enhanced this already grimy experience. The unlicensed top 40 soundtrack on top of that made everything stranger and more realistic.

Not a movie that would benefit from a pristine restoration.

To any 80's horror fan just discovering this film:

    Read that synopsis.

You may think, "Wow. A movie that gets all those elements right would have to be one of the best films ever made. Could it really be as fantastic as it sounds? I mean is such an achievement in cinematic perfection possible?"

    The answer to that is,

    Yes.
