Hillbilly Elegy is a poorly directed film that is very Oscar Bait. I don’t even know how I feel about this. Ron Howard is just not a director for me. He makes very bland movies and this is no exception. The film is honestly too dramatic. It’s dramatic scene after dramatic scene. It definitely could’ve worked more with a better style. It just isn’t very well made. I really don’t like the cinematography. The emotions could’ve worked more if this was helmed by a better director. The emotions mostly seem forceful and over the top. The film is really trying to win Oscars. This film is definitely gonna work for some people and that’s great! I’m glad it’s able to hit some really hardly. Sadly it didn’t do much foe. It feels a little cheesy at times. Amy Adams tries her best here but maybe she tries a little too hard. She is great in some moments but she’s a bit too over the top in other moments. I don’t hate her performance but she could’ve done so much better. Glenn Close is the best part here. She shouldn’t win but she’ll deserves a nomination. She brings a good bit of heart to the film. The other performances are just fine. Gabriel Basso is just very bland here. In fact all of the present day stuff is quite dull. Not to say that I love the past stuff either but more of that worked me especially Close’s character. If you grew up/live in the South this might work for you. I just find it very dull. It’s not necessarily boring but it’s just meh. It’s hard to really figure out how I feel about this. It’s a film that tries so hard to make you emotional yet it didn’t make me feel all that much for the most part and that’s due to Howards’s direction. If your someone that doesn’t pay attention to things like directing you may enjoy this. It just feels so generic. The screenplay definitely isn’t the best. I don’t like the use of narration. I didn’t even like the score that much even though it’s from Hans Zimmer. The makeup is good though. I think this could’ve good but at the end of the day it just isn’t. It mostly fails. Close is the best part. She’s really the anything that stands out about it. It just left a bad taste in my mouth. It’s not awful to be honest as some say but it’s bad. Overall Hillbilly Elegy is just a generic film that falls flat.
