"Villeneuve and his fellow screenwriters Jon Spaihts and Eric Roth have attempted to streamline and flesh out Herbert’s prose as best they can. Yet as accessible as their script may be, there isn’t much of an emotional heartbeat thundering in this gigantic visual spectacle’s chest. With precious few exceptions, these were not characters I cared about, making whether they heroically persevered or met a tragically bitter end inconsequential as far as the bigger picture was concerned."

"No such luck with Ron’s Gone Wrong. Even though its heart is in the right place, and although there’s an admittedly sublime vocal performance by Galifianakis, the storytelling is just too muddled to be effective. The climactic moral to this wacky tale of friendship in an age of omnipresent digital connectivity tries to play things down the middle, and in the process slaps itself in the face right when it’s also trying to pat itself on the back. Color me unimpressed."

"Night Teeth is Collateral with fangs by way of Stephenie Meyer and, surprisingly enough, I don’t mean any of that as a negative. Written by Brent Dillon and directed by Adam Randall, as slight as this one-night-driving-vampires-around-L.A. thriller might be, when taken on its own cartoonishly minimalistic terms, this bit of bloodsucking nonsense is actually quite charming."

"Hansen-Løve twists things into a circular pretzel during the climax, and I loved seeing how all her seemingly disconnected themes and plot strands suddenly came together into one with such rhapsodic ease. It’s an open-ended conclusion to the proceedings that feels refreshingly authentic, all of which helps make Bergman Island one of the more ebullient joys I’ve had the pleasure to see this year."

"The genius of the film, a labor of love for all involved and a passion project for Ice Cube, Dr. Dre and Eazy-E’s wife Tomica Woods-Wright for over a decade, is that I don’t have to relate, I just have to understand. Gray, along with screenwriters Jonathan Herman and Andrea Berloff (World Trade Center), plop the viewer into the center of things, ask us to listen to what it is these masterful musicians and lyricists are saying, to stop focusing…

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

"But the main reason the film works as well as it does is that Edwards and his crew treat the material like they’re making a hard-hitting WWII epic in the vein of Battleground or Attack, only also one mixed with the likes of The Dirty Dozen, The Big Red One and Where Eagles Dare, a healthy dose of Platoon and The Thin Red Line thrown in for good measure. This is a gritty film, one where the stakes for these…
