...I’m cheating a little bit with my best movie of 2020, but I don’t care because Steve McQueen’s Small Axe anthology is the most impressive filmmaking achievement of the year. Director Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave, Widows) created a five film anthology series revolving around stories about the lives of West Indian immigrants in London during the 1960s and 1970s. All of the films are available to stream on Amazon Prime.

 The title of the anthology references an old Bob Marley song that says, “If you are the big tree, we are the small axe.” Most of these films ended up being in my top 25 of 2020 individually, so to give some smaller films some recognition I decided to combine them for my last blog post. 2020 brought many films that moved me, but none did so quite like Small Axe...
