Too old for Hamlet, too young for Lear.
When you fall in love with a screen couple, you feel like you could watch them forever. You never want the movie to end. You just want to sit there and hear the two of them duet with each other. Like Emmylou Harris and Gram Parsons.
Maybe it’s because I’m getting long in the tooth but these guys are easily one of my favourite couples in cinema – certainly from the last thirty years. Only Forster and Grier in Jackie Brown capture my affection more. Gandolfini and Louis-Dreyfus are incredible. I wish they did a hundred films together. They could have been our Hepburn and Tracy.
Does your dog like David Foster Wallace? I’m almost certain mine does. He’s always wearing a bandanna. And you should see the footnotes in his essays. They’re endless.
(The titles he uses are a good indication too. His latest one’s called A Supposedly Nice Butt I’ll Never Sniff Again)
