Shomin-geki

The word shomin-geki (庶民劇, "ordinary people drama[s]") refers to a genre in Japanese cinema that depicts small contemporary plots about the common people. Shomin-geki is a term created by the Academia: in Japan, these movies were called shōshimin eiga (小市民 映画), meaning "films abouts the petite bourgeoisie"; or homu dorama (ホム ドラマ), from English "home drama". Both terms are less inclusive than shomin-geki. Shōshimin eiga, a comercial label coined at the start of the genre, defines better the prewar films, in which class differences and popular settings were more relevant.
