Fred Gwynne's reactions to Joe Pesci in this are pure gold. Maybe Pesci's most relatable and likable character too. And Marissa Tomei just kills it. I grew up with this one and it's still one of my all time favorite comedies, always a joy to revisit.

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

An exceptional and totally enthralling period piece, full of style and atmosphere too. Michael Fassbender is just awesome as Mr. Rochester. And Mia Wasikowska is such a powerhouse in the title role, and absolutely kills it in the combative and emotional dialogue with Fassbender. It's one of my favorite performances and the proposal scene is fucking unforgettable. She is amazing is that scene and I watched that part three times. More people should watch this, it's so weirdly romantic and stylish, I'm surprised it doesn't have more of a following.

I was probably heading towards a 3 ½ for this, I was liking it, but not blown away. And then that last scene, it just hits you like a ton of bricks. I kind of feel that way about Hopkins performance too, so much is in those last few moments.

There's some nice stuff here and Tom Hanks and his young co-star make for a compelling pair, but the whole thing lacks the narrative and artistic weight that have been present in some of the best recent Westerns. Good but forgettable, overall this is one of Paul Greengrass's lesser films.
