    The Burning

    ★★★

    Movie #2 of Hooptober 8.

    An entertaining slasher from the early days of the genre. It follows all the clichés of the genre but that is definitely a plus for movie that was a part of the early days of inventing and testing those clichés. And although it doesn't quite get into new territory it is effective and has some great effects.

    Eaten Alive

    Movie #1 of Hooptober 8.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    When you know it, it is very clear to see that this is directed by the same man who directed "Texas Chain Saw Massacre".
    TCM had a lot of things going for it that Hooper tries hard to replicate in this film and he fails. It simply lacks tension and the visual style. "Eaten Alive" is just incoherent and looks cheap.
    The Puppet's Nightmare
    ★★½
    Movie #5 of The Weekly Animation Challenge 2021.
    Task #3: Director Spotlight: Émile Cohl
    Playful and surreal animation that feels like a fever dream.
    Has Plympton found any inspiration in this short?
  • Cool World
    Cool World
    Movie #2 of The Weekly Animation Challenge 2021.
    Task #8: Rotoscope
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Bad acting and an incoherent story that barely makes sense and that's poorly told with a lot of strange choices.
    The only think I enjoyed was all the animated character designs.

  • 17 Again

    17 Again

    ★★½

    Movie #1 of Scavenger Hunt #71 | February 2021.
    Task #6: A high school movie from the late 2000s.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Completely predictable and full of clichés but it is entertaining and it has its charm.
    I really didn't like the storyline with Ned (Thomas Lennon). It was just an annoying character.
    The New Mutants
    ★★★
    Movie #3 of Scavenger Hunt #70 | January 2021.
    Task #16: Watch a film that was delayed more than two times.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I don't understand all the hate this movie gets.
    It not perfect, the dialogue is not always that great and the story feels rushed at times.
    But it is really entertaining with a young cast that has great chemistry. I really like the cast and especially Anya Taylor-Joy is a pure joy to watch.

    From reviews I can…

    Boyz n the Hood

    ★★★½

    Movie #4 of 52 Years In 52 Weeks: 2021 Edition.
    Year: 1991

    A very predictable and straightforward drama, but what sets this movie apart is that it sets out to prove a point and succeeds. It is effective and packs an emotional punch in the end.

    The Deer Hunter

    ★★★★

    Movie #3 of 52 Years In 52 Weeks: 2021 Edition.
    Year: 1978

    This is a great film!
    It has some pacing problems with a first act that is a little hard to get through even though everything is thought out with great detail and a lot of "small" dramas (a love triangle, a cheating, pregnant woman, abuse) and a big party.
    But when the setting changes it's a completely different movie. It's tense, dramatic and unbearable to watch at times. And when the third act sets in it hits you right in the gut. Brilliantly done.

    Gretel & Hansel

    Movie #2 of 52 Years In 52 Weeks: 2021 Edition.
    Year: 2020

    Movie #1 of The Podcast Macabre 2021 Horror Challenge.
    Task #52: Film from 2020 or 2021
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    "Gretel & Hansel" is visually compelling and it succeeds in creating a dark and dreamy mood but the pacing falls flat a few times and it ends feeling kind of uneventful.
    This is obviously the work of a brilliant writer and while I can see a lot qualities it just didn't create an emotional connection with me (and I will admit that I had to read about the novel afterwards to really get the story).
    This is a pile of garbage with a storyline that makes no sense and annoying characters and computer effects that were outdated even in 2005.
