    Annette

It's hard to know where to even start with this. Annette is so wild and strange from the get go that you barely have time to get your bearings. But it's clear that was the goal. Annette is very clearly made with vision despite how batshit it.

Broadly I'd say the music wasn't exactly Sondheim, but there are a few standout songs that I liked. And the final piece I thought was incredible in a really great moment. There were…

    The Tragedy of Macbeth

I really suck at Shakespearean language so I basically had to have a translator make sure I was following along (I mostly was). For me it'll have rewatchability simply because of how good it looks. It's such a cool, brutalist, minimal take on the thing and I really loved how they pulled it all off. Even in a minimal set the images managed to be very striking. My only gripe on that side of things was that it's super DUPER…

I liked a lot of the individual parts of this: Some of the characters were solid and they all felt more fleshed out than anybody in 4 did; the kills were BRUTAL and somewhat more varied; and this is the first one to have any genuinely scary moments since the OG. If that is enough for you then you will love it.

Unfortunately it is not enough for me. 5cream is still super stuffed with slasher logic (dumb dumb shit)…

    Scream 4

    ★★

Thought this was super boring and repetitive. It had too much going on for me to care about anyone. It tries to reintroduce the original cast and endear you to a bunch of new characters and for me they ALL came across as flat. Structurally it feels like every other scene starts with a phone call and ends with a five minute chase scene. None of the kills were interesting or fun. I don't know, the whole thing just seemed kinda slapped together.

    Don't Look Up

This is a hard one to quantify. On one hand there were a lot of elements I liked; the kind of Armageddon meets Melancholia/Seeking a Friend story I found pretty compelling. I actually liked Leo a LOT in this. It is occasionally ACTUALLY very funny. The effects look pretty cool. And by the end I was glad I sat through it... Once.

On the other hand, it's open-faced, surface-level commentary about our political and media industries, and it's commentary I…

    Sound of Metal

    ★★★★½

It would be ridiculous to not start this review talking about Riz Ahmed. Sound of Metal is his movie. Not to take anything away from his support from Olivia Cooke or Paul Raci, but Riz takes us on this extremely emotional journey with him. He makes you feel Ruben's frustration in moments that could easily have been lost by a lesser actor. You feel his pride in his accomplishments, you feel the growing internal stillness he's able to cultivate. It's…
