Casino Royale holds up not only as an incredible action spy thriller, but as the film that rekindled the Bond franchise. Martin Campbell grounded Bond in a way we had never seen before, giving us a complex character who was far more brutal and rough around the edges, but who still carried himself with class and cheekiness. He masterfully pulled back the curtain, giving us an inside look into the trouble and pain that comes with the glorified lifestyle of…

This film holds a very, very special place in my heart.

Above all of it’s technical and conceptual mastery, La La Land makes me feel something no other film ever has. My emotional and nostalgic connection to it is stronger than my connection to any other film. It came at a really interesting point in my life, and I identified with Ryan Gosling’s Sebastian more than I have with any other character. I just saw so much of myself in him…

I remember seeing this in theatres on a holiday and walking away being mesmerised. After revisiting this, I am pleased to say that the first half definitely holds up. The opening day of the dead sequence is something I revisit honestly monthly on YouTube. The score here perfectly weaves in and out of the title theme, diegetic and non diegetic sound - and it’s brilliant. The “one take” approach works so well, and I thought that it had the perfect…

A very fun and thrilling 007 adventure that is perhaps one of Bond’s most iconic missions of all time. A great story with some cool moments of actual spy work! I don’t need to even mention it but of course the opening credits, tailoring and outfits and cars are cool! The one thing I didn’t enjoy all that much was yet again, how overt the objectification of women is in this film. It really has not aged well.

    ………..

What the hell did I just watch. Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman bared their entire souls giving these performances. I am certain they both went to a place unheard of by the majority. The calibre of these performances was seriously something else. And the scenes they had together were mesmerising.

The cinematography was masterful to say the least. The lighting in this film was insane. I just could not believe how perfectly crafted some of the frames in…

    Quantum of Solace

    ★★½

Although this did further develop SPECTRE and showcase more of what they are capable of, it did so in a convoluted and unrefined way. Quantum of Solace lacks direction.

It does a good job of showing Bond after his world fell apart, but it tries to juggle this with a larger than life plot that doesn’t seem to have much of a payoff at all. And the closure for Bond was tacked onto the end of the film like a mid…
