Will McGrew’s review published on Letterboxd:
Film #30 of 30 Days, 30 Countries Project: Japan
"Why must fireflies die so young?"
I had high expectations for this movie. Reviews of Grave of the Fireflies tend to fall somewhere in the spectrum of highly recommended to ecstatic. Now that I've seen it, I can only lend my voice to the masses. This is a great film, the most evocative war movie that I have ever seen. It's lyrical style captures the devastation of the protagonists, as well that of Japan as a whole. The narrative arc functions both as an allegory and an incredibly personal journey.
Post Scriptum: Since I've now completed my May challenge, I edited the list to include an awards segment for my favorite movies, countries, and so on.
