First: kudos to not necessarily rehashing the first movie, but trying to move the characters beyond the confines of the emotional and physical worlds they inhabited in the first movie (i.e. character growth and we leave the Quick Stop).

That being said, there still is a fair bit of classic sequel retread syndrome, with similar bits repeated (e.g. here’s the Star Wars theorizing; here’s the debate overall odd sex practices).

Maybe if I saw this as a high schooler…

So, I watched this mid-summer and not on the officials “Midsummer Eve,” but that’s good enough for me.

An amazing cast: this is the Kevin Kline Shakespeare performance I was hoping for in As You Like It; I love how all in Stanley Tucci is and I really enjoyed his chemistry with Rupert Everett.

It really is a great comic plot with the classic “everyone gets married at the end” ending.

The updated setting doesn’t get in the way too much, but not sure why they didn’t keep it set in Greece rather than say it was in Italy yet keep the Greek city names?

I’ve only seen 3 of Joon-ho’s movies, but he tackles class issues in way no one else I’ve seen do it. It has elements of dark comedy and satire mixed with the grotesque.

There were definitely moments hard to watch, but largely because they were so tense.

He takes his time allowing his characters set up their ingenious scheme the characters, and then things take a weird, unexpected, brilliant turn and things slowly — then much more quickly — start to fall apart.
