Death Note

Death Note ★★★★½

In a way I'm glad I didn't see this back when it was released, my taste was so different in 2017. I feel like my taste has developed to the point where it's unique to my sense of self. This film through a camp lens just elevates everything to an emotional visceral level. it simultaneously celebrates and mocks emo hot topic kids, acknowledging the melodramatic beauty and the destructive behaviour of such a group.

It raises so many good questions about criminal justice that doesn't feel shoved down your throat. The visual look is stunning and above all Lakeith Stanfield gives the most high IQ performance I've ever seen. Wingard took the original anime and warped it into criticism and celebration of the youth counterculture of America and I am just supposed to hate that? No fucking way.
