    The Descent remains as tense, claustrophobic, and scary as it was when I first saw it years ago. Bonus fact: the UK version has a different ending than the US version… check them both out!

    In storytelling, one of the subjects that I find most horrifying is woman-on-woman violence. Male violence against women is horrifying in its brutality and misogyny, but the betrayal of woman-on-woman violence adds a layer of evilness that is profoundly upsetting. Another trope that I find horrifyingly compelling is that of the complex, nuanced villain. With motives that we can, on some level, relate to, these characters make us question our own moral-ethical convictions.

    Eyes Without a Face combines these two concepts…

    I would classify this more as a surrealist drama than as a horror film, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. The metaphor of parents experiencing grief in different ways unfolded over a reasonable runtime and my boyfriend and I enjoyed discussing it and figuring it out together. Worth a watch for those who enjoy surrealist cinema and extended metaphors.
