Could’ve used less CGI dogs, less voice-over and exposition from Cruella, less needle-drops, and been 30 minutes shorter. But overall, I appreciated that this tried to be unique, used some interesting camera movement, and had some good costume and set design. But why is this movie almost 2.5 hours long?
Hamilton has the catchier songs, but this is my favorite work of Miranda’s thus far. Much more personal and true to life, not that it has to be a comparison. But I think this is Miranda at his most raw. While Hamilton is certainly the “magnum opus,” at the end of the day, there’s more in In The Heights as an entire piece that would make me want to return to it again and again.
