    Drive My Car

Around the world in 14 Films Festival #2

    A joke:
Ryusuke Hamaguchi, Hong Sang-Soo, Éric Rohmer and Abbas Kiarostami get into a car. During the five hour drive, no one speaks a word.

An audience member got up to leave the screening because he couldn't take any more and collapsed trying to open the door. This was 20 minutes in.

    The World to Come

Almost completely suffocated by its own imposed weight and leaden tone. The narration and music specifically really dragged down this films wondrous nature and beautiful images. Overall it files under "nice enough", but not much more. It could have been a lot better than this, with Vanessa Kirby and all.

    A Hidden Life

A Hidden Life is a typical Terrence Malick film: apolitical, anti-intellectual, extremely esotheric and hollow to its core.
Malick presents the viewer with a profoundly political problem: A man does not agree with the nazi ideology and refuses to serve a regime beacuse of his own opposing viewpoint. On the surface, this is actually an interesting situation. What are this mans reasons for not complying when the rest of the village is? Why is his conviction as strong as it…

  • Dune

I really wanted to love Dune, but I didn't. Throughout the entire runtime I was waiting for one scene to hook me, to engage me in what's happening and allow me to immerse myself in the experience. But it never happened. For full transparency's sake, I read the book earlier this year and saw the Lynch film shortly after, so I went in knowing full well what the plot was and how another film adaptation handled the material. And while…
