I rate movies based on how enthusiastic I am about recommending them to others. 1/2 star is my starting point.
Come for the stunning animation, stay for the exploitation colonialism revenge story.
Seriously, though, this film is surprisingly technically proficient - the use of light, texture, design and motion are all *chef's kiss*. The top notch cast and goofy humour don't hurt, either.
This could have easily fallen into the trap of overly-sentimental and frothy, but it strikes the right balance between presenting relationships and genuine feeling without descending into trauma p0rn.
If you're overlooking this because it's female-led and could be dismissed as a 'chick-flick' then please don't. It's a lovely and thoughtful watch. Angela Bassett and Loretta Devine give particularly strong performances.
