Luke Thorne’s review published on Letterboxd:
David Lowery directs this fantasy drama in which a newly deceased, white-sheeted ghost revisits his residential home to try to re-join with his grieving wife. Starring Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara.
Having only just had his life taken away, a ghost comes back to his suburban home to comfort his mourning wife, only to discover that in his phantom state, he has become freed in time, left with no choice but to view unreceptively as the life he distinguished and the woman he adores gradually sneak out.
Casey Affleck gives a very good performance in his role as C, the man who returns as a ghost after perishing in a car accident, only to discover that the life he once had and also trying to reconnect with his wife is going to be harder than he expected. Affleck suits his role really well and makes the most of the time he has on the screen.
Elsewhere, Rooney Mara is very decent in her role as M, C’s wife who is heartbroken by what has happened and is finding it hard to come to terms with her husband’s death. Mara suits her part well and makes the most of her screen time.
The direction from Lowry is very good because he allows the facial expressions to be seen to a strong effect throughout, while also keeping a tense atmosphere happening as well and the script is written to a decent standard by the director as he makes the movie easy to follow.
The camera and editing stand out best in terms of the technical aspects, because the camera makes good use of the dark locations, while the film is edited to an impressive effect.
Besides, they do say that no Christmas is complete without ‘A Ghost Story’ and I also believe that the movie deals with the themes of legacy, love, loss and existence very, very well.
Overall, A Ghost Story is a very impressive and sometimes-tense fantasy drama, due to the very good and central performances from Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara, along with David Lowery’s excellent direction and script, the camerawork and editing. One of the best fantasies to have been made in the year of this release.
