At some point it becomes impossible to accurately and reliably “rate” a Koreeda film.

I can’t give Like Father Like Son, After The Rain, or Our Little Sister a 5 star rating, as they don’t quite linger like a Shoplifters, or a Nobody Knows, a Still Walking, or even an After Life does.

But as a director, he so perfectly sums up what it feels like to be human, in all its hope and tragedy and bittersweetness, and time and…

It always astounds me how some Ghibli films are able to express such complex and colourful hues of emotion with the simplest premises whereas so many other family friendly animated films are stuck painting with the same old primary colours. Pixar have kind of found it in a way but they still have to go so high concept, to the point where they’ll literally personify the emotional spectrum or the concept of a soul to access it. Timely themes, but very heavy-handed and extremely 90s to the point of distraction. Defo trying to see some more Burnett this year though, I loved his short When It Rains

Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin (who also co-stars) give us another underdog story about champions of an extremely dangerous craft risking it all in the name of killing their own limitations. Not quite as nail-biting and emotionally wrecking as The Rescue, but far more engaging and powerful than Free Solo. Also, a man quite literally sleeps off a promise of death in a tent that is dangling something like 18,000 feet up the cliff-wall of a mountain. So there’s that.

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

Finding it hard to separate the poor (?) quality of half of this movie with the sheer euphoria of the fan service in the last 45-60 minutes, like getting gum in your hair

It is extremely lucky for Spider-Man: No Way Home that so many of us have that trigger in our brain that is wired to release a shitload of seratonin the moment we’re faced with something remotely nostalgic. The three spider-man coming together is the apex on-screen example…

The Worst Person in the World

    ★★★★★

The best part about The Worst Person In The World is that it’ll be one of those films that can offer a hundred entirely different takeaways and points of relatability to a hundred different people in their 20s + 30s and all hundred of those people’s interpretations would probably make sense and be completely valid. It’s a film with inklings of so many little things about a specific period of ones life that all come together to make this sad funny…
