A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master

    ★★★★

Halloween/Friday the 13th/Nightmare on Elm Street marathon.

Film 14 - A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master (1988)

I’m honestly a fan of this fourth entry in the franchise, which seems to be one of the ones people don’t seem to like.

    It’s a little bit shocking.

I think this film does the best job at making this group of friends feel like an actual group friends. I think they’re characterized quite well and I cared for every…

Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood

    ★★½

Halloween/Friday the 13th/Nightmare on Elm Street marathon.

Film 13 - Friday the 13th: The New Blood (1988)

As a stand alone film, it’s fine- which is why I’m going slightly positive on the score. As a marathon film being watched right after the first six films, it’s annoying as fuck.

I’m so tired of this franchise feeling like the exact same movie playing over and over and over. I appreciate that they tried to give us a character with a…

    ★★★★½

Halloween/Friday the 13th/Nightmare on Elm Street marathon

    Film 12 - A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987)

What a fantastic slasher film. One of the best I’ve ever seen and easily one of the few that challenges the original film.

I love how the Nightmare franchise always does something unique and different, which is much more palpable when being watched at the same time as the Friday franchise - which is just the same film over and over.

    I…

Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives

    ★★★½

Halloween/Friday the 13th/Nightmare on Elm Street marathon

    Film 11 - Friday the 13th Part 6: Jason Lives (1986)

Probably the best Friday the 13th film. Mostly because of the new life breathed into the tone and identity of this film. Kind of a shame that it took six movies for this franchise to find a palpable heartbeat, but I’ll take what I can get!

The film is just so infectious, it treats its absurdity with wit and it’s clever! This…

  • A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy's Revenge

A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy's Revenge

    ★★★★

Halloween/Friday the 13th/Nightmare on Elm Street marathon

    Film 10 - A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy’s Revenge (1985)

I love the Nightmare on Elm Street sequel. It reinvents itself to keep things interesting instead of rehashing the first film with new characters. I love the possession storyline this has going on.

I like the characters, the gay subtext of the film gives it a unique flavor not found in any other slashers I’ve seen.

    I love the kills…

Friday the 13th: A New Beginning

    ★★★½

Halloween/Friday the 13th/Nightmare on Elm Street marathon

    Film 9 - Friday the 13th: A New Beginning (1985)

Might get my horror card revoked for this, but this is absolutely the best Friday film thus far.

It’s actually entertaining! The characters are all extremely memorable and fun, sure they might be exaggerated caricatures, but the film realizes this and uses it to its advantage. It has a campy edge to it that kept me amused at all times.

    A New Beginning actually…

    ★★★★★

Halloween/Friday the 13th/Nightmare on Elm Street marathon

    Film 8 - A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

Wes Craven struck gold with this one, it’s inventive as much as it is frightening. A true breath of fresh air in a time when slasher films were starting to feel the same.

Freddy is an awesome villain, and he is genuinely scary in this first outing. The film really makes you afraid of sleeping, and that sense of urgency, fear and altered mental…

  • Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter

Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter

    ★★½

Halloween/Friday the 13th/Nightmare on Elm Street marathon

Film 7 - Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter

The worst Friday film in the original four films. At 90 minutes, the pacing in this thing still feels so messy - I can’t count how many times the film gave us build up and release only to start again from zero. It felt like I were slugging to the climax until It finally sneaked up on me.

It tries to have better, more…

Halloween III: Season of the Witch

    ★★★½

Halloween/Friday the 13th/Nightmare on Elm Street marathon.

Film 6 - Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982)

Honestly, when viewed as a stand-alone film which should’ve simply been titled Season of the Witch, fans would’ve been much more forgiving, because this is a damn good film. Not surprising at all that it has developed a cult following.

I adore the concept, and think it does a great job at building suspense through it, not to mention that the kills…

  • Friday the 13th Part III

    Friday the 13th Part III

    ★★★½

Halloween/Friday the 13th/Nightmare on Elm Street marathon.

    Film 5 - Friday the 13th: Part 3 (1982)

Colored me shocked, what was once one of my least favorite Friday films might just end up being one of my favorites? Instantly more memorable than the first 2, the cheesy 3D decisions, horrible acting and beginning stages of campiness really make this such a fun time for me. Was everything I mentioned intentional? No, probably none of it was, but if it works…

  • Halloween II

    Halloween II

    ★★★½

Halloween/Friday the 13th/Nightmare on Elm Street marathon.

    Film 4 - Halloween 2 (1981)

Some weird direction choices that felt widely fabricated, and I’m also not a fan of the sibling plot line as it does remove some of the creepiness from Michael’s character. Other than that, this is very fun, very atmospheric and suspenseful. I adore the hospital setting - I think it’s a fantastic set piece to have an entire slasher film take place in, and the film does…

  • Friday the 13th Part 2

    Friday the 13th Part 2

    ★★★

Halloween/Friday the 13th/Nightmare on Elm Street marathon.

    Film 3 - Friday The 13th Part 2

Generally the exact same film as the first, except this time we don’t have awesome Mrs Voorhees and instead we are treated to a laughable Jason. The kills generally have the same level of decent effects although nothing as good as that Kevin Bacon death scene from the first one. The characters are somewhat more memorable this time around.
