This was terrible. Not even the good kind of bad. I regret watching this.
So my review is a little delayed but there does not seem be the right words for this movie. However, I have distilled my love of it down to a few points. Toshiro Mifune, Top Knots and Swords.
Mifune also has the most expressive face I have ever seen on film and it warms my heart that this movie exists
The direction on this is also amazing with some really unusual shots. Kurosawa you have a fan for life over here.
This was way better than I thought it was going to be. Yes, it is a less well regarded Kurosawa and perhaps the social commentary on post-war Japan seems a bit out of date to us, but this is quite a solid movie.
I love the fact that it would have been really easy for the two main characters to have a romance in the end and the affection was hinted at with the affection for a piece of artwork…
