Once Upon a Time in Anatolia

    ★★★★½

There is a scene in this film, a background scene, that completely encapsulates the film for me.

It is a scene of two shopkeepers judiciously sweeping the bits of sidewalk and road immediately in front of their place of business. In between the two sweepers lies a huge mound of sand.

No matter how many times they sweep, within minutes any trace of their work will have disappeared.
It will have made no difference.
    They keep sweeping.

    Nuri Bilge Ceylan…

I heard people talk about immortality,
    but I ain't seen it.
l wondered how it'd be when l died.
What it'd be like to know that this breath now
was the last one you was ever gonna draw.
l just hope l can meet it the same way she did.
    With the same... calm.
    Cos that's where it's hidden -
    the immortality l hadn't seen.

What's it like to be lying in the middle of an unfamiliar jungle with birds…

    Emma.

    ★★

I always look forward to new Jane Austen adaptations. There should be at least one every year, and at least one really long 6 hour serialized one every year, and I still wouldn't get enough. Alas, some of them would no doubt be disappointing, and unfortunately, this is definitely one of those.

First, the music. It was unusual to say the least, but I thought it could be interesting. It invited us to a lighter version of Emma; a fun…

    Promising Young Woman

    ★★★★

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

I loved most everything about this film except for one thing: I was a bit disappointed that she only gave the idiots a 'talking to'. And that made me wonder... how is it possible that she came out of each one of those encounters unscathed (and there were many: her book was full!). Seems implausible.

There is something rather interesting about making a revenge film, a totally immersive and engaging and emotional roller-coaster of a revenge film without any physical…

    Dogtooth

    ★★★★½

Dogtooth is disturbing. It creeps into your psyche and stays there for days. It plays like an absurdist comedy at first but quickly shows its true colours. It is a gripping, compelling, shocking and extremely sad story of three nameless nearly adult children who live in a world created exclusively by their parents.

By "nameless" I don't mean that we are never told their names; I mean they have no names. The implications of this are enormous (take a minute…

    Man of Steel

    ★★

There is a scene in Man of Steel that says it all.

In the middle of a showdown with the bad guys in downtown Metropolis with people everywhere, a flaming truck or some other huge thing is thrown towards Superman who is standing in front of a building. A building presumably filled with people.

Superman jumps out of the way.
He jumps out of the way.
    Superman.

The truck goes into the building destroying I don't how many floors killing…
