Thewlis' riff in the modernist building was genius.
While his treatment of women was hard to watch, it was consistent with his character. When I started this movie, I wasn't sure I could make it through all that, except that Thewlis' performance is so fine. Then I realized how close he ran to certain people I've known in my life. His mindset is so brilliantly revealed throughout his random encounters, and I came to understand. Nobody captures screwed up working class men quite as accurately as Mike Leigh.
I'm so glad that I was able to see this on Mubi.
When I began watching, I wasn't quite sure what I thought...whether it would fit in with my generally realistic tastes. The main character was so cute, like an anime character--well, I was a bit put off. But it didn't take long for me to go with it, and I found myself drawn into the lives of these friends, and curious to find out where the film would go.…
