Joel Lake’s review published on Letterboxd:
Fantasy Island is a Blumhouse horror that misses the boat on almost every level imaginable. The story of an island that gives you what you wish for but not as you intended and this is a perfectly fine premise(the tv show lasted seven seasons) but the story quickly turned into this slasher movie and every twist and turn was more absurd than the last.
The cast also didn't mess well together as Lucy Hale and Maggie Q brought more dramatic performances and storylines to the film while Ryan Hansen and Jimmy O Yang brought this comedy element into the film with their more action film storyline not fitting well with the other storylines when they're forced together. Michael Pena also feels poorly cast as the caretaker of the island as he often plays this stoic character that comes off cheesy more than anything.
The story is the central problem as the reveals are just so dumb that its hard to give them so much plausibility to make the story continue to work through the finale.
Fantasy Island is a mess of a film that no one was asking for, made no sense and ultimately disappointing on about every level it could.
