Yuasa continues to be a guy to keep your eye on but this still didn't hit for me like I thought it would. Feels like you could easily hack off a good half hour and still leave plenty of the digressive spontaneity that makes it sing. Stands in relation to Ponyo/mermaid fiction in general the same way that Crybaby stands to the original Devilman manga. Love the remix/modernization, am dubious of its questionable view on metaphor and clumsy coming-of-age narrative.
