What a great actor John Garfield was.
A potentially interesting premise executed with the subtlety of a chainsaw. And it feels like that's precisely what was desired. Tonally all over the place with pedestrian plotting. Feels more like an exercise than a film (could it have worked better as a short?) that just keeps going and says the same thing over and over, sometimes losing its message in the process.
There's a lot of talent and skill here (Carey Mulligan is excellent, as always), but the culmination of everything only connects emotionally or intellectually on the most basic and shallow level.
