I watched Demon Seed last night on Criterion, and then saw that a film by the same director, Donald Cammell, was on Shudder. White of the Eye is some kind of weird, slow burn, neo-noir slasher flick. The last act of the movie really took me by surprise and gave me the chills. David Keith and Cathy Moriarty also have some really memorable, poetic lines. Only downside was the bad wigs in the flashback scenes. Got a heart from me.

Sometimes I wonder why I have a Mubi subscription. Then I find something like this. Haunting, experimental, ominous, and better than the film it's supposed to be documenting. It's as if the stark black and white footage of Begotten accidentally got mixed with the surrealist photography of Clarence John Laughlin. The soundtrack is simple: abstract sounds and booms, like hammers hitting piano keys, and industrial jackhammers and noises, side by side with elevator music. Reality and the film world blend. There's no dialogue except for Christopher Lee's reading at the end describing Dracula's death. A truly liminal movie.

This isn’t a documentary that starts from point A and goes to point B. While we do get some of Lunch’s personal history (a flash in the pan shot of her as a little girl, an anecdote about getting a ride from a stranger), the documentary focuses on Lunch’s ideas and themes. There’s no mention of the Dead Boys or how Lunch got her punk name. Although her work is covered, there’s no chronology of it. Her music, spoken word,…
