Started logging and reviewing the movies I watch at the beginning of 2020.
The management of tone in this movie is masterful. My favorite of Lanthimos’. The deadpan style is unmatched. The characters literally feel dead even before the plot is set in motion. Pairing that with an abundance of meticulously staged, beautiful camera movements is so smart. I do understand how the story can be a lot for some people. I found it a lot more digestible and enjoyable by reading up on the Greek myth it’s based off of before going in. Would recommend doing that.
Last time I watched this (sophomore year in high school) I didn’t know what subtext was so I was blown away this go around. Nothing new to add, it’s one of the most enjoyable movies to watch ever.
After thought: actually think Julianne Moore’s performance gets overlooked. She’s so insanely funny in this. We need to appreciate her more.
I mean... it’s one of my favorite performances of all time in a perfect movie. As I work my way backwards through 70s/60s/50s cinema, Paul Newman’s talent as an actor (not just movie star charisma) jumps out as much as anything else. Him and Elliot Gould have become staples for me.
Also love the saturated blues. Paul Newman’s bright blue eyes, blue prison clothes and cloudless, blue skies.
